Dubai Airport metro in one minute

The driverless Red Line links Dubai Airport (DXB) directly to Downtown Dubai in about 25 minutes, with stations at Terminals 1 and 3. It is the cheapest way into the city — a single ride runs 3–7.5 AED on a Nol card by zone — but two things catch people out: the strict one-suitcase luggage limit, and that it does not run 24 hours. Which terminals have a metro station?

Two of the three: Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 each have a Red Line station, about 700 metres apart. Terminal 2 has none — it sits 7 km away and connects by bus or taxi (terminal layout).

A neat trick from the airport itself: you can ride one stop between the T1 and T3 stations to switch terminals instead of walking or waiting for the free shuttle. The Red Line runs from the airport through the city centre and on toward the Jebel Ali Industrial Area, interchanging with the Green Line at Union and BurJuman stations.

How much is the metro from Dubai Airport?

3 to 7.5 AED per ride on a Silver Nol card, depending on how many of the city's seven zones you cross: 3 AED for one zone, 5 AED for two, 7.5 AED for three or more. The card itself costs 25 AED and comes with 19 AED of credit; the cheaper paper Red Ticket (2 AED) charges 4 / 6 / 8.5 AED per zone instead.

You must buy a Nol card first — the gates take no cash or bank cards directly. Top up at the machines inside the station with cash or card. One fare covers up to 3 transfers within 180 minutes, the card needs a minimum 7.5 AED balance to enter, and children under 5 travel free.

What are the metro hours from DXB?

The Red Line starts at 05:00 most days and runs to around midnight, a little later on Friday — not a 24-hour service, which is the key planning fact for late arrivals.

Trains come every 4–7 minutes. Decision rule: landing between roughly midnight and 05:00 (or 08:00 Sunday), the metro is closed — take a taxi from the 24/7 rank instead. Hours can shift during Ramadan.

Can I take luggage on the Dubai metro?

Within the limit only: one suitcase plus one piece of hand luggage per passenger. It is the single rule that disqualifies the metro for many arriving travellers — with more bags, the taxi rank or a transfer wins.

If you are inside the limit, the ride is comfortable: fully air-conditioned, free Wi-Fi, a dedicated carriage for women and children, and optional Gold Class seats in the first car. Plan your exit station to minimise walking — Dubai's heat makes a long platform-to-hotel stretch tougher than the map suggests.

Which Nol card should I buy?

For a short visit, the paper Red Ticket at 2 AED is enough — it holds up to 10 single trips or 5 day passes and works on metro, bus and tram. Riding transit daily for a week? The Silver Card (25 AED including 19 AED credit) is the better buy: it drops each fare to 3–7.5 AED and covers every mode including taxi, tram and sea bus.

The Gold Card costs the same as Silver but unlocks the Gold Class carriage; the Personal Card is aimed at residents. All are topped up at the same station machines with cash or card. Whichever you pick, keep at least 7.5 AED on it — the gate will not open below that balance.

Metro, taxi or transfer — which is best?

Take the metro if you are solo or a couple with one bag each, travelling in service hours, and heading somewhere the Red Line serves — nothing beats 3–7.5 AED to the city. Take a taxi (~60 AED to Downtown) for groups, heavy luggage, or any arrival outside metro hours. Book a private transfer when you want a fixed price and meet-and-greet after a long flight.

The honest trade-off: the metro is cheapest and dodges traffic, but adds walking in the heat and caps luggage.
