Dubai International Airport (DXB) is the city's main airport and one of the busiest hubs on the planet: home base of Emirates, hub of Flydubai, and about 14 km from Downtown Dubai. This guide covers the terminals, the metro and taxi options with real AED prices, parking, hotels and layover tips for 2026.

The layout confuses people for exactly one reason. Two of the three terminals sit side by side, while Terminal 2 is a separate building roughly 7 km away. Get that right and the rest of DXB is easy. Prices below were checked in July 2026 against the official RTA tariffs.

Which terminal does my flight use?

Simple rule: Emirates means Terminal 3, Flydubai and most budget carriers mean Terminal 2, and almost every other airline flies from Terminal 1. T1 and T3 stand next to each other; T2 does not.

Terminal 1 handles more than 60 international airlines across some 200 check-in counters. Its boarding gates live in Concourse D, a separate building opened in 2016 and reached by a free automated people mover, which lets T1 process up to 20 million passengers a year. Terminal 3 belongs to Emirates alone and spreads across three concourses (A, B and C). Terminal 2, built in 1998, is the small one out at the 7 km mark.

How do I get from Dubai Airport to Downtown?

A metered taxi takes about 20 minutes and lands near 60 AED; the Red Line metro needs roughly 25 minutes and costs a zone-based fare on a Nol card. Checked July 2026, official RTA rates.

Decision rule: travelling alone with one bag, take the metro. Landing after 11 PM, moving with kids or hauling three suitcases, take a taxi from the rank or pre-book a transfer. Skip the bus for Downtown entirely; there is no direct route.

Is the metro practical with luggage?

Yes, within the official limit: one suitcase plus one piece of hand luggage per passenger on RTA trains. Pack more than that and the taxi rank wins.

Red Line stations sit at Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, about 700 metres apart. Trains are driverless and air-conditioned, run free Wi-Fi, and include a dedicated carriage for women and children plus optional Gold Class seats in the first car. You pay with a Nol card; the paper Red Ticket costs 2 AED at station machines and covers up to 10 single trips, with fares set by how many of the city's seven zones you cross.

One local caveat: summer heat. Downtown stops like Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall still leave a walk at street level, so check the last stretch to your hotel before committing with bags.

How do I move between terminals?

Between T1 and T3 you have two free options: ride the metro one stop between their Red Line stations, or take the free inter-terminal shuttle bus. The two stations are only 700 metres apart, so the hop is quick either way.

Terminal 2 is the exception again. It sits about 7 km from the main complex, which means a short taxi ride rather than a walk. Connecting between a Flydubai arrival at T2 and an Emirates departure at T3? Treat it as a proper transfer and allow at least 45 minutes of buffer on top of check-in times, more at peak evening hours.

Where do I park at DXB?

Every terminal has short-stay parking within a 2–5 minute walk plus a cheaper economy lot on a free shuttle. At Terminal 1, Premium Car Park A suits stays up to about 5 hours (2–3 minutes on foot), while Economy Car Park B sits 7–9 minutes out with a 24/7 shuttle every 20 minutes.

Terminal 2 mirrors that pattern: Car Park A a 3–5 minute walk, Car Park B 10–12 minutes with a free shuttle. Terminal 3 keeps it simplest with a three-floor car park 2–3 minutes from the doors. Can I sleep inside the airport?

Yes. The Dubai International Airport Hotel is airside in Terminal 3, stretches across its concourses, and rents 5-star rooms by the hour — built for layovers, no visa or landside exit needed. It runs several restaurants, the G-Force fitness club and the Timeless Spa.
